Setup

  1. Copy the GEM data file to the c:\MantidInstall\Data directory.

Loading a workspace

  1. Start MantidPlot
  2. On the Mantid workspaces toolbox click the Load button and select Load Raw File
  3. In the Load Raw File window click the browse button next to the filename entry
  4. Find an load the GEM file you just copied. It should be in c:\MantidInstall\Data
  5. Click OK on the Load Raw File Window.
  6. When that completes the Mantid Workspaces toolbox should contain a workspace called GEM38370

Displaying the instrument window

  1. Left click to select the workspace GEM38370 and then right click to bring up the context menu
  2. Select Show Instrument
  3. After about 30 seconds the instrument window will appear. The detectors in the instrument are coloured by default with the integral neutron counts.
  4. Double click on the instrument window title bar to maximise it.
  5. The information bar at the bottom of the window gives the instructions as to how you can move the view of the instrument
  6. Try moving the instrument around and looking at it from different angles. (performance will differ based on the graphical performance of your PC)
  7. If you get lost you can use the axis view drop down box to return to some predefined positions

Pick Mode

  1. Click the Pick button
  2. The button title will change to normal and the information in the bottom of the window will change from the navigation directions. You are now in pick mode and cannot move the view in this mode.
  3. Move the mouse cursor over the detectors, the values and respectives ids are displayed in the information at the bottom of the window.
  4. You can also click on a detector to bring up a context menu of possible actions.
  5. Click the Normal button to return to the normal navigation mode
