Here are details of a minimum and recommended specification of computer for Mantid and the MantidPlot user interface. Obviously the requirements of Mantid can vary hugely depending on the data volumes you wish to process. This is to give some idea of the specifications that will suit most purposes. Many of the reflectometers do not record many spectra and therefore will run very happily on the minimum specification. More demanding datasets from instruments such as GEM will benefit from a more powerful processor and more RAM. For dealing with large datasets we recommend using a 64Bit linux operating system to allow use of memory beyond 4GB.

Minimum Specification

  • Processor: Pentium class 1Ghz
  • Memory: 1GB RAM
  • Graphics Card: Standard Intel 945 chipset
  • Hard Drive: 500MB available for temporary files
  • Operating System: Windows XP or higher, or a Linux OS

Recommended Specification

  • Processor: Dual core 2Ghz
  • Memory: 4+GB RAM (More memory allows for processing larger datasets)
  • Graphics Card: A graphics card with 128MB dedicated memory
  • Hard Drive: 2GB available for temporary files
  • Operating System: Windows XP or higher, or a Linux OS

Note: on 32 bit operating systems such as most versions of Windows the operating system can only use 3GB of RAM.
